Canada has ambitious goals for the 2010 Winter Games. Through the Own the Podium – 2010 initiative, Canada aims to achieve athletic excellence by finishing first in the medal count at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and among the top three at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.
Own the Podium – 2010 is a vision and plan to enhance the recruitment, development and preparation of high-performance athletes.
It is a collaborative effort between Canada's 13 national winter sport organizations and the major winter sport partners, including the Government of Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Paralympic Committee, the Calgary Olympic Development Association, and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). Own the Podium - 2010 has an overall budget of $110 million, to which the Government of Canada has contributed $66 million.
The 2010 Winter Games will bring tangible benefits to Canada's developing and high-performance athletes in the same way that the 1988 Calgary Winter Games created a legacy of world-class training and competition venues.
Canada is recognized as a world leader in promoting the Olympic and Paralympic Movements. The 2010 Winter Games will further enhance that reputation and will generate important benefits for sport and physical activity for all athletes in Canada.
