The Cultural Olympiad is the cornerstone in the strategy of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to fulfill its commitment to the Cultural Pillar of the Olympic movement, as mandated by the International Olympic Committee. The Cultural Olympiad—a true celebration of the imagination—features music, dance, theatre, visual and digital arts, film, literature, and spectacular outdoor events.
The Cultural Olympiad is made up of three major components:
The Cultural Olympiad Festival is a multidisciplinary festival of performance, film, and visual and media art taking place at multiple venues in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. The Government of Canada has provided $1 million for Cultural Olympiad 2010 (from January 22 to March 21); $1 million for Cultural Olympiad 2009 (from February 1 to March 21); and $250,000 for Cultural Olympiad 2008 (from February 1 to March 21).
Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition is the online home of distinctive digital programming and a portal through which to experience many of the live events taking place during the Cultural Olympiad. The Government of Canada has provided $400,000 in funding to Canada CODE, an initiative of the Cultural Olympiad's Digital Edition (CODE). Canada CODE, a first for Canada and the Olympics, lets the public take part online in a joint creative project by uploading photos and stories that tell about their daily lives as Canadians. Canada CODE will provide additional opportunities to get into the Olympic spirit during the Olympic Torch Relay.
National Presentation and Touring Program, part of the Cultural Olympiad's pan-Canadian engagement strategy, facilitates regional and national touring by performing artists featured in Cultural Olympiad 2010.
We encourage you to take part in the Cultural Olympiad by visiting Canada CODE or by buying tickets for cultural events through the Vancouver 2010 website.
