These Games, to be staged in Vancouver and Whistler, offer an unparalleled opportunity to celebrate and showcase Canadian athletic, artistic and cultural excellence on a national and international scale while creating lasting legacies for Canadian communities, businesses and citizens across the country and around the world.
The Government of Canada is a proud partner of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, investing more than$1.23 billion to ensure their success. The government’s investment will cover infrastructure and legacy costs, as well as essential services such as security, immigration and border services. The government is proud to be partnering with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), the provincial government of British Columbia and other partners to showcase Canada as a modern, competitive and innovative country.
More than 5,500 Olympic Games athletes and team officials from 80 countries, and 1,350 Paralympic Games athletes and team officials from more than 40 countries are expected to compete at world-class venues in British Columbia.
While promoting health and fitness, some of these facilities will continue to operate as centres of high-performance international competition after the Games, leaving long lasting and sustainable legacies for hosting cities and communities.
The disciplines represented at the 2010 Winter Games will be: biathlon; bob sleigh; curling; wheelchair curling; ice hockey; ice sledge hockey; luge; figure skating (single skating, pair skating, ice dancing); long track speed skating; short track speed skating; skeleton; Nordic skiing (cross- country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined);alpine skiing; freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
The 2010 Winter Games also present an occasion to showcase the best that Canada has to offer as a partner in business, innovation, and science and technology. Canada’s economy is dynamic and built upon strong fundamentals and world-leading capabilities in a range of sectors, including information technology, engineering, biotech, and aerospace. For example, Canadian environmental technologies are playing an important role in making the 2010 Winter Games the most sustainable Games to date.
The opening and closing ceremonies for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver, Richmond and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010 and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
