Congratulations Canadians! Canada is a beautiful country in the way it honours and respects everyone from diverse cultures. The Olympics have brought Canada together. The positive energy of each and every Canadian showed right through Canada and brought this energy to BC. I am proud to be a Canadian and to be part of a Country and other Canadians who play fair. To the Canadian Athletes, you make us proud!

Remembering 2010
It was February 12, the year two thousand and ten
Gathered in Vancouver were the World’s finest young women and men
The Winter Olympics were set to start on that day
And the flame burning in the cauldron was an amazing display.
Young Alex Bilodeau was Canada’s first to strike Gold
A story of brotherly love was soon to be told
“My brother, it is his strength that inspires me so
This medal, it is his, he is my hero”.
We all watched in awe as Joannie Rochette began her skate
What strength she displayed despite her recent heart break
Only days before, her beloved mother had suddenly died
But Joannie took the podium, her mother there by her side.
Hockey is Canada’s game we claimed, but what would unfold
We fought to the end and both teams brought us Gold!
With red mittens and jerseys, we were bursting with pride
In the stands of each game, waved a crimson red tide.
But soon the events had ended and it had all gone by too fast
We had revealed our Nation’s humour when Catrina got her turn at last
All the athletes were amazing – so many memories they would hold
Our medal count was outstanding – 26 with 14 Gold.
But it’s not really the medals that we Canadians value the most
It’s that these games woke up a nation from the west to the east coast
Known for being modest, that gentle giant in the north
What an immense display of passion we Canadians did put forth.
As spectators without any prompting, we belted out the Anthem
We opened the eyes of the World as we welcomed them all in
The Maple Leaf flew proudly wherever you would turn
And, yes, Vancouver CAN be a fun city we would learn.
So in the end was it all worth it, the planning and vast dollars it has cost?
Well, it was 17 days of excitement and passion that we would hate to have lost
We will forever remember the moment that Sid the Kid scored his goal
And, yes, Colbert, each one of us is so proud to be a Canadian Ice Hole.

(POEM)
Seeing Gold
When the time comes, they perform better than the best
The strongest, the fastest, they all made their way West
To play in the Games, chase their dreams and succeed
Despite the hardships they would face, they chose to lead
In VancouverBC there were hopes for the gold
Bilodeau was the first at twenty-two years old
The sighs of relief, hushed by the cheers from the crowd
We all have one more reason to be truly proud
On the snow covered mountains, countries reunite
To battle it out, the competition is tight
With the world watching, some fall and are broken
Sadly, in 2010 one athlete has fallen
At the opening, Canada’s flag was held high
For the men and the women with the courage to try
For our native land, the one we call home
Where all people are equal and are free to roam
The torch travelled, city to city, too many to name
The great one was honoured right here, lighting the flame
Near the rings in the water, the lights in the sky
Cheers could be heard, everyone knew why
I am Canadian! We are Canadians!
The maple leaf in a sea of red mittens
With all our hearts open and free, we can conceive
In the most beautiful place on earth, I believe!

Thank you, Mr. Furlong and to your entire VANOC Organizing Committee; ALL Volunteers and ATHLETES. A stupendous JOB!!
When I watched your (Mr. Furlong) interview, you talked about Jack and his "Proud of where he come from", that really struck a nerve. I too am from Jack's home town. What a fitting tribute by Mrs. Poole and yourself to fulfill Jack's wish to bring and run the "O Tourch" through Mortlach, SK.
Many years ago the coach for the Silver Medalist,Cheryl Bernard, Dennis Balderston said to me "If you can't be proud of where you come from, how can you be proud of where you are going!"
I'm damn PROUD, and so should you, Mr. Furlong.
THANK YOU!! Hanna,AB

Many things come to mind as we think of the Olympics. The excitement for us started with the Torch Bearer Relay arriving in Prince George. Through the internet, we tracked the runners when they were still about one hour out of town and arranged for our young granddaughters to come and watch the Relay as it came down our street. The excitement peaked when the torchbearer agreed to have his picture taken with the girls and their friends and then he autographed their hands. We all caught the Olympic spirit and waited with anticipation for the Games to begin. Even though we couldn't be there in person, we felt like we were a part of all the celebrations, from the Opening Ceremony, with it's many emotions, through as many events as we could manage time wise, to the final hockey game, and the Closing Ceremony. We were so proud of all of our athletes whether or not they won a medal, the many volunteers whose work often went un-noticed, the spectators who behaved themselves (mostly), the Police Security, and most of all, of John Furlong. What wonderful ambassadors for Canada they all were. The segment, Difference Makers, by Rick Hansen, brought such a human element to the Games. These were all ordinary people like the rest of us, with extraordinary stories. We mourned with those who lost loved ones during the Games, were saddened with those who had setbacks and didn't do as well as they had hoped, and cheered with those who did their best. When it was all over, we realized how blessed we are to call Canada our home. We were thrilled to hear our National Anthem being sung so often by so many people. Thank you to all who had a part (no matter how big or small) in making these 2010 Olympic Games so great. God Bless Canada!

Extraordionary and fantastic job. To all the great Canadian athletes, you were fantastic. Whether or not you won a medal(s), you will always be golden in my heart. You left me with very special and wonderful memories to last forever. A very special thanks to all the cheerful and helpful volunteers. To the organizing committees and everyone everyone else involved, you made me so proud to be Canadian. To ALL the politicians, may you live up to high standards of honour and pride set by these games. It will be expected. I trust you will keep the funds available for all our athletes, young and old, regardless of your political parties.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Furlong, All Volunteers, and Athletes. You gave it your All! There were so many touching human stories, one which stands out...the man Mr Furlong, who was always gracious, positive, and full of excitment... he too was grieving the loss of his best friend towards the end of the preparations prior to the games starting. You did well, Mr. Furlong.

I started off looking forward to the Olympics in Vancouver but I wasn't very excited to start. It wasn't until the torch bearer came to our city(Surrey). I saw so many people line the streets with their Canadian mitts and jerseys. My family went to Holland Park, where the torch bearer would arrive with some 20,000 people screaming with excitment. With uncontrollable tears, I became excited for what was to come.
As the games began, even though at first the Canadians weren't winning medals the excitement of everyone at the events roared with excitement.
But as we began winning and just watching each time the Canadians stepping onto the podium, I couldn't stop crying, I was so happy and proud of Canada.
My most memorable event was the short track speed skating with Charles Hamelin in the 1000m final with 3 other skaters.
As the race began, the camera went to the stands where his girlfriend screamed and cheered in support for all her worth, who was another Canadian athelete. At the end of the race, Charles came in first and blew a kiss to his girlfriend. His girlfriend jumped the railings and came down to ice level and gave Charles a huge hug and kiss, congratulating him on wining the gold.
Every event has it's own story to tell with lasting memories. Like the moment USA scored the tie goal just seconds before the end of the 3rd period. My heart sank in disappointment of what the outcome may bring. But starting the overtime and watching Sydney Crosby score the golden goal was amazing!! Then going for a drive and watching the true Canadian spirit on the streets of everyone walking, driving, store owners on the side of the roads and shouting with joy for Canada.
This is a moment that will never be forgotten how the Canadians got together like a family and cheered for what they believed in.
I'm applying to become Canadian and seeing what I saw over the Olympics how everyone got together as one. This is what I want, "To be a Canadian!"

Congratulations Vancouver, VANOC, volunteers and all the athletes for an absoultely amazing Olympic experience.!!!!!! You all have done Canada proud!!! I have always been a huge Olympic fan and a very proud Canadian, but what I have experienced over the past 2 weeks surpassed even my wildest dreams of how wonderful our country is and to showcase that to the world. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD TO BE A CANADIAN AND TO LIVE IN THIS GREAT WHITE NORTH COUNTRY OF OURS!!!! It has been truly overwhelming to see so many Canadians express their pride for the world to see, after all we Canadians are known for being on the quiet side when it comes to showing our patriotism. Well I hope all Canadians will embrace this moment in their hearts forever and continue to stand up and show the world how proud we are to live in this glorious (and polite) country we call home. The Olympics has always been a symbol for bringing the world together in peace, well now it has also brought a new Canada together in everlasting pride.Thank you once again for all your hard work and for making us all so proud to be Canadians!!!!!!!! My heart is so full of pride right now I think it might even be in the shape of a maple leaf!!!!!!

It has been such an honour to participate as a volunteer at these 2010 Olympic Games. Although it was much more difficult than I ever imagined, it was also much more rewarding as I saw our beautiful city come to life with goodwill and patriotism. It brings me to tears every time I think of it. I am so proud to have played my tiny part in making all this happen for my children, my city, my country and the world. I was blessed by the courage and determination of all the athletes, Canadian and otherwise, and they have inspired me to do better, work harder and contribute more. Thank you VANOC for taking us on this amazing journey. The ending has been more than we could ever have dreamed. Thank you for dreaming bigger dreams than we could have imagined. My children will never forget this time. It is truly GOLDEN!

Just a couple of personal anecdotes which pretty much sum up my pride in being a beneficiary of the wonderful folks at VANOC. My wife & I were given tickets by a relative to the ladies curling gold medal game. Two months before the event my wife was very seriously injured in a fall. The efforts of VANOC to ensure we were able to exchange our seats so that she could attend in a wheelchair environment meant so very much. At the same venue we were so impressed with a volunteer (from Ontario) who did so much to ensure my wife was able to enjoy the experience.
My grandsons and I were able to attend the mens hockey bronze medal game at GM Place. Again, a tip of an old man's hat to the volunteers and especially the security screeners for doing difficult jobs in such a pleasant manner.
Finally, thanks for the BC Transit folks. The shuttle bus service to and from King Edward Station and the quick, efficient and friendly/informative service to and from Stadium Station made my venue visits a positive experience.

I would like to thank John Furlong for his leadership and dedication to bringing the Olympics back to Canada. Thank you for your vision and belief and for truly 'making Canada better'. My parents always taught my brothers and I about Canada and its special place in the world. But to see it as we have these past 17 days has been magical. Thank you to all our athletes, regardless of whether you won a medal. My family has been inspired and impressed by your focus and hard work, by your modesty and generosity (how many of you told us your medals were ours!). And Mr Furlong? I wanted to say, in particular, that I thought that one part of the torch not rising at the Opening Ceremonies was significant. Your partner, Jack, was unable to be there and we lost a special young man. You handled it all with grace (and humour, as we saw at the Closing Ceremonies). Thank you thank you thank you. I have always been a proud Canadian, but never more than these last two weeks.

Congratulations and thank you - to the City of Vancouver, to VANOC (especially to Mr. Furlong) to the multitude of volunteers and to every athlete who competed - for an Olympic Games that truly touched the hearts and emotions of every Canadian. I have never before seen such an outpouring of pride and joy in this country. From coast to coast, we were glued to every event. No one wanted it to end. We shared some sorrows; we glowed and applauded all the victories. I think these games made us finally realize what it is to be Canadian. Well done!!!

VANOC...take a BIG bow! You did a marvelous job from the opening to the closing ceremonies.
You set a new standard for the World.
A simple "thank you" is so inadequate for your tireless efforts over these past several years to make Vancouver 2010 such a success.
Again, take a bow and.."thank you" from the bottom of my heart.

Way to go, Canada...! it's nice to have these things once in awhile so we can show our national pride, like everyone singing O Canada, even the athletes on the podium.....by the way, don't you think that "own the podium" was a success after all? I sure do and it's about time we paid some attention esp. being the host country, that was the right thing to do.
And thanks to Byron of the U.S. for your message, I appreciate it.

Congratulations to all you Canadian athletes. It is a pleasure to have you as neighbors. I live in the US, in Florida, far south of Canada, but some day my wife and I hope to visit your beautiful country. Your Olympic opening and closing ceremonies were beautiful, much better than China's and extraordinarily better than our last one. Your performances during the games were likewise fantastic. I am glad that you set the gold records for most earned during the games and most won by a host country. And I especially wanted you to win the men's hockey game. Don't think that all Americans are so hung up on themselves that they think there is no other country; you are doing lots of good things, many of them better than we are. Congratulations, again, Neighbors!

A great big thank you to Vanoc and to john furlong from a local Mission girl for a job very well done. The sense of community seems to be overflowing. For all the crap and negative attitudes that had to be endured by Vanoc and john Furlong, congrates the occasion was met with dignity and tremendous results. I feel our province has been shown off in all it's glory and the domino effect that will follow is to our economic benefit. John, big pat on the back buddy, we could not have had a better represenative than you!!

The Olympic Games are so much more professional now that although the Canadian performers have not won as many medals as we had expected, they have performed well and wish them all to know that recognize the tremendous effort they have made to qualify for and participate in the games and that in so many of the winter sports the Canadians participate and enjoy them with great performances year after year. The example you set as world class citizens and atheletes are to be admired by all of us.

Vancouver, you have done us proud! This has been the best Winter Olympics EVER! That there have been glitches and problems goes without saying, but you have definitely achieved your goal of "creating and delivering an extraordinary experience that makes all Canadians proud."
To all the athletes, whether you won Gold, Silver, Bronze or nothing at all: I am SO proud of all of you; proud to be a Canadian; proud of the determination, effort, training, courage and sacrifices you have all made to be where you are.
Thank you SO much!
My favourite moments have little to do with medals, but with the courage of individuals like Ms. Rochette, and the young lady who fell while skiing , and although she had no chance of winning, never-the-less completed her final jump anyway. Man, you are all gold in my estimation!

The Gold Rush
For the past week I have been glued to my television with a bag of jujubes in one hand and a remote control in the other. I became a serious Olympics couch potato. The words “Own the Podium” have caught my attention like nothing I have experienced in a long time. I, like many other Canadians, was hoping that we would finally kick butt in the winter Olympics.
I watched as we won our first gold medal on Canadian soil. I watched as our first woman won Canadian gold. I was moved to tears.
Then I saw many of our Olympic hopefuls dashed. I watched in horror as our hockey team was beaten by our rivals the Americans.
Instead of tears or anger I saw that Canadians took it all in stride. I saw thousands of people wearing the maple leaf jerseys who were representing every nationality in the world. I witnessed hockey being translated into Punjabi for the benefit of new Canadians. They also believed.
I saw something that I never expected. I saw Canada come out of its shell. We stood in front of the world and said, “We are Canadians and that means we are good, decent, proud people. And, we don’t care who you are or where you come from; you are welcome.” Somehow we all decided that red maple leafs were cool and flag waving was something we wanted to do in front of the entire world.
The original idea behind the Olympics was to bring the world together in peace and harmony to compete on a level playing field. It’s not about winning medals or who’s on top or whose ideology is better. It is about living together peacefully. It’s about getting along.
Canadian athletes who compete in this spirit should be applauded whether they earn a medal or not. The reason we are waving that maple leaf so proudly even after coming in fourth, fifth or fifty-ninth is because to compete in these games is a representation of what it is to be Canadian. We welcome the world every day in peace and harmony and it is time that the world was aware that it is possible.
Why wouldn’t we be proud? Enjoy the party Canada, we earned it!

To all our athletes who feel they may have fell short know this:
We thank you for the years of training and sacrifice that you have endured to get here. Seeing you living your dreams is inspiring. Many years from now all you'll have of these Olympics are your memories of who you were at that time. That is what really matters.
For all of us that wish we could squeeze into Vancouver and say it ourselves "Thanks for all the memories of Canadian pride that you all have instilled in us."
For those who have more competition to come: Don't fear failure for our sakes. Have fun doing what you do and do it for you. We will go along with you however it turns out and thank you for the ride. :)

You guys are awesome, whether you medal or not--it's a matter of micro-seconds. We think you are absolutely amazing for having even got to the Olympics. We recognize how much you have put in to this. CTV is doing a great job of helping us understand the difficulty of the various sports so we can have a better idea of just how super you all are. Have fun, make friends with other nations. We are proud of every one of you.

I just want to thank Mellisa Hollingsworth for restoring my Canadian pride in the Olympics. I'd gotten so caught up in the own the program hype and gold medal fever that I forgot winning and losing is such a small part of sport. Putting yourself on the line and competing is so much more important and far from "letting down the country", Melissa kept me glued the the Television cheering her and our other fantstic sliders on. The athletes and press and worry about winning, I'm going to sit back, cheer and enjoy their efforts. Go Canada, Thanks Mellisa!

I am immensely proud to be a CANADIAN! I made this once in a life time trip to Vancouver to participate in the spirit of games, not having a ticket to any event. I came away attending the pairs short program on Sunday by simply lining up for tickets! Thank goodness for this last minute opportunity. Vancouver is doing a GRAND job hosting this event. To all athletes YOU ARE ALL WINNERS in the eyes of Canadians. We're behind you all the way! To those of you living close enough to visit Olympic city, do it...... there's still time!!

I just watched the Opening Ceremonies and wanted to tell you how great they were. They were very classy, not overdone. K.D. Lang singing Leonard Cohen set the stage for the icons to follow.
The choices for the flag bearers and the flame lighters were excellent. Your selection highlighted the depth of talent and athleticism in Canada as well as the quality of our athletes and cultural icons.
You have confirmed my Canadian pride.
Congratulations on a job well done!

I was very proud that Ridgetown, our little town of 3200 folks, was hosting a leg of the Olympic Torch Relay. So proud in fact, that I wanted to do a banner as well as Olympic Rings all lit up as the Torch Bearers passed my home. Our little town has suffered some serious blows recently (as have many other Canadian towns and cities) and I thought we all needed a little extra boost. I took rolls of 4 inch by 610 foot photofinishing paper (that we no longer has use for) to all 4 local schools and asked if they might get the students to sign them. WOW!!!! I was overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm this request generated. Our banner is almost 2 miles long now and I hope to somehow get it to Vancouver for both the World Olympians and Paralympians to see the spirit from a small town in Southwestern Ontario. I live in Ridgetown, deemed "The Friendliest Town In Ontario" by Reader's Digest. I have applied to the Guiness Book of Records but have not heard back as yet - keeping my fingers crossed. So far, I have spent about $30. in markers for this "Canadian Banner of Best Wishes to all Olympians."
I included all the names of the participating Olympic countries (couldn't add 2500 athletes) and I hope many of the Olympians will sign it too. I just have to pack it up and see if I can afford the shipping!
I BELIEVE it will make it!!

I am very proud that the Olympics are in Canada and in Vancouver to boot.
I want to wish all the Canadian athletes GOOD LUCK!! we are with you all.
Let us be patient with our Canadian athletes, if the medals don't come in rightaway, we still need to support our Canadian athletes.
Bonne chance à tous nos athlètes, bon courage.
Soyons tous patients, si les médailles ne rentrent pas tout de suite, nou continuons à supporter nos athlètes Canadiens.

FEBRUARY 2010
February holds promise
Of warmer days still to come.
This year our Winter Olympics
Will be dreams come true, for some.
Vancouver will be a beehive
Of Olympic activity,
Whistler will be filled to the peaks
With spectators determined to see.
All competitors vying for gold
On ice or on compact snow,
Four years of dedicated practice
Is now down to this soon-over show.
They’re all winners, just to be here,
In highly competitive sports,
All deserving of medals
But some will just get good reports.
Will it be worth their efforts?
Absolutely, they’re living their dream,
On a stage the whole world is watching,
Inspired by an “I Believe” theme.
Volunteers have all had training,
In exactly what they are to do,
To help make the Vancouver Olympics
Successful in every venue.
Of course, we’d like to see Canada
Accepting some sought-after gold,
But it’s as important to give the world
An experience we’re proud we bestowed.
I believe!

I wake up every morning at 5-45am on Prince Edward Island and watch CTV to see where the torch is each day. I look at all the smiling faces and the happiness this has brought to so many Canadians, the flame has an air of magic in it, maybe that is why it burns so brightly, I have my computer turned onto the web cam so I can track it during the day, which is truly amazing, as I carried the torch on November 22nd here on PEI, and because of this technology my family back in England and Spain could actually see me do this, I want to say thank you and to tell you it was truly an honour to have carried the flame, I felt so proud that day to be Canadian. I proudly display my torch where it can see it at all times, my suit is going to be mounted into a glass case along with a Olympic pin. As a child I dreamt of being an Olympian, but it was just a dream, but you made my dream come true, I am part of the Olympics, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Trish Thorpe #047

I made my way down to Sir Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton, Alberta the night the Olympic Torch was making it's way through our city. This was the last stop on the Edmonton tour. I was excited throughout the whole day and could not wait to venture out on a beautiful evening with my family to witness a little bit of history. We walked a block or so from where we had parked in order to join the festivities. As we drew nearer and could hear the music and the cheering I felt really happy. As we made our way into the square I all of a sudden became super emotional. A city and a community coming together to celebrate something so spectacular was overwhelming to me. The friendship and support from Edmontonians was outstanding. I felt very proud to be Canadian and live in such a great city! Here's to the 2010 Winter Olympics! GO CANADA GO!!

I am so looking forward to watching as many of our marvellous athletes perform their magic as I possibly can. I would love to be right there to cheer them all on but my TV screen will have to do. I am so proud of every one of them for the fierceness they show in competition and the great sportsmanship they show in all aspects of their lives. Eh-Oh Canada GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
