Security Planning

Security planning for a large-scale event such as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is essential to ensuring safety, peace, order, and celebration. Preliminary security planning began as early as 2003 in preparation for all possible situations that could arise.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the lead agency responsible for security of the 2010 Winter Games. To ensure the safety and security of the athletes, officials, and the public, the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit (VISU) was created. VISU is headed by the RCMP, and also includes: Vancouver Police Department, Department of National Defence and other partners. It has developed a comprehensive security plan that is coordinated across departments and agencies.

In December 2006, the Governments of Canada and BC ratified a Memorandum of Agreement concerning the sharing of costs for security planning and operations directly related to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
