The main ceremonies surrounding the Olympic Games are the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The organizers of the Games draw on their incredible ingenuity to produce exceptional celebrations that will be indelibly imprinted in the memory of every spectator.

Established by the Olympic Charter, the protocol for the ceremonies ensures that they have a unique presentation which sets them apart from any other international sporting event.

Although there have been Opening Ceremonies since the very beginning of the Games in 1896, several elements of the ceremony, which today are part of the tradition, were added over the years. Organizers must follow a set protocol, but this does not prevent the organizing countries from making certain adaptations and innovations for their ceremonies.

Each host city, through its ceremonies and performances, emphasizes in its own way the messages that it wishes to convey. Montréal and Calgary were no exceptions.

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games will be a living representation of Canada’s diverse nature. Highlighting Canada’s linguistic duality and Canadian Aboriginal cultures, the ceremonies will feature a rich tapestry of Canadian talent.
